About Your Professional Development

Professional development is required for continued licensure for all educators and administrators. To be of high quality, professional development is guided by the learning needs of all students, includes accepted theory on the learning needs of educators and incorporates a planned progression for improvement on a continuing basis. A professional development plan that fulfills the licensure renewal requirements is based on the needs of the educator, the students, the school, and the school district in which the educator is currently employed.

An educator/staff member wishing to renew a professional license must receive the approval of his or her Local Professional Development Committee for an Individual Professional Development Plan and complete the required amount of professional development during their renewal cycle:

  1. Six semester hours of coursework related to classroom teaching and/or the area of licensure; or
  2. 180 contact hours (or 18 CEUs) in workshops or equivalent activities related to their IPDP goals as approved by their Local Professional Development Committee.
  3. Coursework, workshops, or other equivalent activities may be combined.
PROCEDURES:
  1. Once you have applied for and received your new 5 year license, you will write your new plan with two professional goals and submit to the LPDC by the first Tuesday in January your new license is issued. (Example: If your new 5 year license is issued July 1, 2019, you MUST write and submit your new plan by January 2020)
  2. Write at least two goals for your professional development. The Licensure Standards require that your goals be based on your needs, the needs of your students, your building and your district. One of your goals MUST relate to student learning. EXAMPLE: I will learn about strategies to improve student learning in the area of reading in order to incorporate them into my daily instructional practices
  3. At the conclusion of completing the equivalent of 180 contact hours or 6 credit hours, there should be a reflection (1 page in length) for each goal written which summarizes how you have grown professionally to assist your goal achievement by completing the course work or PD listed in your activities. All final documentation including reflections (one for each goal), official transcripts and/or certificates are due by March 1 of the year your license expires.
